Neuro-Linguistic Programming was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder at the University of California, Santa Cruz in the early 1970s. It began as a modelling project: studying the techniques of the world’s most effective therapists and communicators, including Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls, and Virginia Satir, and extracting the underlying patterns that could be transferred to others.
The name reflects its three core components: Neuro (how the brain processes experience), Linguistic (how language shapes and reflects that processing), and Programming (how patterns of thought and behaviour can be intentionally changed). Applied in coaching, NLP provides tools for rapid, precise change that operate at the level of the mental patterns that drive behaviour, rather than just the behaviour itself.
